Why elope in Scotland

You can get married almost anywhere here

You can legally marry outdoors almost anywhere in Scotland, and a fine country it is for it too. When it rains, we have umbrellas and blankets, when it’s sunny we’ve got sunglasses and fans.

We can appear on the day, take your photos, and leave you to it; or we can help you plan the whole thing: from the cosy cottage to the charming celebrant. And of course, as a two-person team we are also ideal witnesses.

Questions

Eloping, explained

Is it legal to get married outdoors in Scotland?

Yes. Religious and belief celebrants (such as humanist or independent celebrants) can marry you almost anywhere. Civil ceremonies with a registrar can take place outdoors too, at a location agreed with the registrar.

What paperwork do we need?

You give notice to the registrar in the district where you're marrying, at least 29 days before the wedding. In practice it's best to do this 10–12 weeks ahead, especially if either of you is coming from outside the UK. Check the latest guidance with National Records of Scotland.

We don't live in the UK. Can we still elope here?

Yes. Couples come from all over the world to marry in Scotland. There are some extra steps, so we'll point you to the right official guidance and help you plan the timing.

Will you travel to wherever we want to elope?

Yes, anywhere in Scotland, from the Highlands to the islands. Travel within 50 miles of Glasgow is included. Further afield, we charge for mileage, plus an overnight fee if we need to stay. We'll include it all in your quote up front.

What if the weather's terrible?

We plan a backup location for every elopement. More often than not, we head out anyway, and it can lead to some of the most dramatic images. In the event of extreme weather on the big day, our add-on, The Do-Over, guarantees a second day of shooting on location when conditions improve.

Do you follow Leave No Trace?

Always. We stick to paths, choose locations that can handle visitors, and avoid fragile ground. Confetti has to be biodegradable, or better still, dried flower petals.
